History of the Monongalia County Health Department
The establishment of a full-time County Health Department occurred on September 11, 1929 by order of the Monongalia County Court. It consisted of a full time County Health Officer, a Public Health Nurse, a Sanitation Officer, and a Clerk. The Health Department was housed in the basement of the County Courthouse.
In February 1973 federal funding was secured for the building of a new home for public health. On September 13, 1975 the Monongalia County Public Health Center opened its doors with the mission to preserve health and to prevent sickness and injury, and to maintain wellness. Thirty-three individuals were on staff. Today, we have 80 full time Health Department employees.
