5% Sodium Fluoride Varnish
Fluoride is a natural occurring element found in water, foods, and various dental products such as toothpaste and mouth wash. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), topical fluoride helps prevent cavities in both children and adults.
Fluoride varnish is a fairly new accepted method of professional fluoride application. Fluoride varnish has a higher concentration of fluoride than a gel or foam, but it is completely safe because it is applied in smaller amounts. It helps prevent cavities by stopping the demineralization process of your tooth’s enamel and promotes enamel remineralization. Fluoride varnish has also shown evidence of relieving tooth sensitivity on exposed root surfaces (great for adults that have brushed too hard in the past, or those with periodontal disease).
Fluoride varnish application here at MCHD Dentistry is an easy and faster method compared to using a tray. It’s also not just for kids, adults can benefit from it too! Either our hygienists or Dr.Carrier will mix up the varnish and apply it to all surfaces of your teeth using a small brush. You can expect it to feel sticky at first then it will quickly begin to harden to the teeth. Unlike using gel or foam fluoride, you can eat or drink right away. Just make sure you’re not drinking or eating anything really hot or crunchy. Then all you have to do is brush it off your teeth before bed. It’s as simple as that!
We look forward to showing you our easier and faster form of fluoride application at your next visit!
